Injuries leave lacking numbers: Varsity rugby ISST preview

The varsity rugby team will head to Paris, France to compete in the ISST rugby tournament at the American School in Paris this Thursday, March 8. This year, due to a lack of players, the rugby team is unable to provide sufficient numbers to compete officially in the tournament. Rugby teams usually contain 15 players but the rugby team only is bringing 14 players meaning they will play friendly matches with, depending on the team, around eight to 10 players.

Many factors contributed to the rugby team’s tournament being conducted this way. The team had multiple injuries which restricted players from being fit for the tournament. Also some players are too old for the tournament, due to being born before September 1, 1999 which is the age limit of the tournament.

Going into the tournament varsity rugby player Ethan Snizek (‘20) still has high hopes for the tournament despite not fielding a full team. “We don’t have a full squad, but, I feel like with the players we do have, we’re all very prepared and very motivated to go out there and do what we do best,” he said.

On the pitch Snizek wants himself and the team to emulate the attitude they’ve had the whole season at ISSTs. “A common theme we’ve had the whole year is just leave it all on the pitch,” he said. “Just have no regrets, don’t miss any tackles, don’t mess up anything that you could have done well, and do work for yourself and for the team.”
